Launch of Mother Child Week
(2nd November 2009 , 7th November 2009).

Mother and Child week ceremony was held on 30th October 2009. The Chief Guest for the event was Honorable Minister for Health, Mr. Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani. After his arrival at 3:30 pm the guests were seated. The session was moderated by Mr. Mazhar Nisar with technical support from Dr. Fauzia Aqeel. Recitation from The Holy Quran was done by Mr. Rashid.

Dr. Iqbal Ahmed Lehri, National Coordinator for Family Planning and Primary Health Care, gave the Welcome Note. He explained Mother and Child Health situation in Pakistan. He highlighted the roles and responsibilities of LHWs in betterment of Mother and Child Health and emphasized on the difference made through their efforts. He shared results of last Mother and Child Week. He quoted that health indicators for LHW covered areas are much better than LHW uncovered areas.
After the Welcome note, a video regarding the plight of a pregnant woman in a far flung rural area was shown to the audience and the way a Lady Health Worker saves her life. The background was narrated by Dr. Fauzia Aqeel.
Mr. Martin, Country Representative from UNICEF gave his remarks. He shared the importance of Mother and Child Week. He highlighted the role of LHWs in health care provision and praised their efforts. He asked all Development partners for support of such events.
Representative from Japan Embassy thanked all for giving him opportunity to speak in the august forum. He extended full support on behalf of Japan Government for such health activities.
The Honorable Chief Guest in his remarks praised the work done by LHWs in providing health care at the doorstep of community. He stressed on the role of media in highlighting and projecting such activities. He shared the significance of Mother and Child Week. He then made following announcements:
1. The Mother and Child Week will be held throughout the country in LHWs covered areas from 2nd to 7th November, 2009.
2. In this Mother and Child Week the focus will be on:
a. Prevention and management of Pneumonia
b. De-worming of children 2 – 5 years of age
c. Immunization of children 0 -2 years of age
d. Tetanus Toxoid injection will be given to all pregnant women
e. Effective public awareness sessions will be held during this Week focusing on promotion of safe delivery practices and exclusive breast feeding in children of up to six months of age.
3. All Provincial Health Departments have made all arrangements for the availability of relevant medicines at health outlets.

Then a souvenir was given to the Honorable Health Minister by the National Coordinator, National Program for Family Planning and Primary Health Care. Following key participants were also given souvenirs by the respected Health Minister:
1. Dr. Mehrin Bhutto, Parliamentary Secretary Health
2. Dr. Khushnood Ahmad Lashari, Secretary Health
3. Mr. Martin, Country Representative, UNICEF
4. Mr. Mohammad Cisse, Chief MCHC, UNICEF
5. Dr. Iqbal Ahmed Lehri, National Coordinator, National Program for Family Planning and Primary Health Care
In the end the Honorable Health Minister along with others visited Health House being established at the rear of the hall. He was briefed about the Health House and how it is established. The role of LHWs in Health House was highlighted. Different queries were answered and method of distribution of medicines was shared. After the ceremony the delegates had Hi-Tea.
Health Minister visited the Health House which was displayed in the launching ceremony of Mother & Child week.
